On average at least one woman a week is killed by a partner or former partner in Australia. One in three women will experience physical violence in their lifetime, while 1 in 4 will experience emotional abuse by a former or current partner. Women are at least three times more likely than men to experience violence from an intimate partner; of these women experiencing violence more than half will have children in their care.
It’s clear: family and domestic violence is an issue in Australia.
After experiencing family or domestic violence, survivors are sometimes given support for the immediate crisis; things like emergency housing, access to financial aid, and personal care, but this support is limited. Often survivors are left to navigate a myriad of services and search for help alone; this can be a complicated, confusing and emotionally challenging process.
The Tara Costigan foundation helps victims of domestic violence, and their families rebuild their lives by providing a personal case worker for a period of up to 2 years - at no cost to them. Referred to as Tara’s Angels, our case workers are tertiary qualified, with a minimum of 5 years experience in social work. Each Angel offers invaluable emotional and practical support.
